Another book recommendation: The German Genius by Peter Watson
A 2004 survey conducted in Britain showed that when British ten- to sixteen-year-olds were asked what they associated with Germany, 78 percent said the Second World War and 50 said Hitler.
In this book, Peter Watson tries to show the other part of German history, very often and very deeply forgotten to the general public, that is not related to the Nazi era.
Spanning approximately the time from the death of Bach to the ascent of Hitler, he convincingly sketches out a historical overview of a culture that to a profound extent has shaped the intellectual and cultural self-perception of all the Western world, a legacy comparable to the British contributions to industrialisation and liberalism, or the French enlightenment - but a legacy that has been overshadowed by the terrible crimes of the 20th century, and so almost forgotten, at least in the English-speaking world.
As he summarises, “The United States and Great Britain may speak English, but, more than they know, they think German.”
An interesting, nuanced, thought-provoking and eye-opening read.
